On the Mac Save As… PDF doesn’t activate the links. However, saving to PDF with (Win)Word’s recent versions or using the PDFMaker macros both achieve that aim on Windows machines. And the retrofitting of pdfmark into PostScript was clunky when introduced, and has aged badly. This is quite independent of the output that Word created.Īgreed.

On my version of Acrobat X Pro this is found in Edit > Preferences > General > Create Links from URLs.

Note that whether unlinked but valid URLs become links WHEN viewing a PDF in Acrobat Professional depends on an option in the preferences. I opened your Word document using Word 2010 and Adobe Acrobat X Pro and created three PDFs. Other third party tools must work in the same way as the PDFMaker macros if they are to produce valid links in the output PDF.

This code may be invisible to the user but it is certainly not the same as a simple print command. The PDFMaker macros essentially save the file, add a bunch of PDFmark codes, print that marked up doc to postscript and then revert to the previously saved doc. The act of outputting onto paper is not conducive to creating clickable output. Simply printing to PDF has never made live links. Please post bug fixes in the thread linked from #1 and #2, or send them to the author. And, same as #5 which was in turn like #4, ‘PDF > Save as PostScript…’, at …_PostScript.ps (and in #6, as in #5, URL formatted as link).ħ. (in this #5 I allowed Word to format the URL as a link).Ħ. I opened the file in Word 2013 on Windows 8.1 and this is what I got :ġ. Please, gentle experts of Windows Secrets, have you any ideas about pushing Word into doing this right? That suggests that the problem is in Word rather than in the PDF printer driver. That file contains no instances of “pdfmark”, which is how PostScript would add links to a PDF. So ⌘P, bottom-left of window pop-up ‘Save as PostScript…’ (it helps that I can program in PostScript). Solutions suggested include open in a different application (changing the page layout), or open on a different operating system (changing the page layout and the fonts). Google suggests that this is a long-standing bug. But if ordinary words have been made into a link, it is formatted as a link but is inactive. If the link text is there “ then the PDF reader guesses it is a link, and it works. (They are just the same except that the latter file is twice the size.) Not if I do “Save as PDF…”, nor if I do “Save as Adobe PDF”. Hurray!īut on the Mac, the external links aren’t there. Clicking on a cross-reference would jump there clicking on an external link would command the default browser to do the obvious thing. If I printed this to PDF using a Windows machine, those links would work in the PDF. And it contains lots of ‘Insert > Hyperlink…’ links to external documents.
So I have written a fabulous document, which has paragraph numbering, and many ‘Insert > Cross-reference…’ links to paragraphs. This is the home of the world’s foremost Microsoft experts, so please allow a question about Word for Mac 2011 v14.4.3 (140616), running under OS X 10.9.4. Even though this is Windows Secrets, this Mac user has a lifetime subscription - mostly for the security stuff.
